Filmed at London's Barbican Centre in December 1989, Leonard Bernstein conducts his own Candide featuring the cast he chose himself starring Jerry Hadley in the title role. This performance, staged and directed by Humphrey Burton, is released for the first time on DVD. Bernstein conducts with power and zest, drawing on London Symphony Orchestra's full symphonic resources and the richness of the American and European musical traditions inherent in the score. With this unique video footage of a composer conducting his own work, one of Bernstein's last great performances is a vivid tribute to his legacy and to his millions of fans around the world.
