On the run from the police, Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo) holds Ashley Smith (Kate Mara)─a recent widow and single mother battling drug addiction─hostage in her apartment. To cope with the horrific situation she finds herself in, Ashley reads aloud from Rick Warren's book "The Purpose Driven Life" and soon forms an unexpected bond with her captor.
