On the run from the police in March 2005, Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo) holds Ashley Smith (Kate Mara)─a recent widow and single mother battling drug dependency─hostage in her apartment. To cope with the horrific situation she finds herself in, Ashley reads aloud from Rick Warren's book "The Purpose Driven Life" and soon forms an unexpected bond with her captor.
