In July 1969, U.S. senator Ted Kennedy (Jason Clarke) accidentally drove his car off a bridge at Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts, resulting in the drowning death of his passenger--28-year-old campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne (Kate Mara).
