All The King's Men (1949)
Three Oscars (Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress) went to this political drama about Willie Stark (Broderick Crawford), a backwoods Southern lawyer (conspicuously modeled on Louisiana's Huey Long), who deals his way into the governor’s mansion, but whose lust for power grows unmitigated. Robert Rossen directed and adapted Robert Penn Warren's novel, and Mercedes McCambridge, John Ireland, Joanne Dru, and John Derek co-starred. 110 min. BW/Rtg: NR
On The Waterfront (1954)
Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Actor, this powerful, brilliantly performed saga focuses on the dreams, despair, and corruption of New York City longshoremen. Marlon Brando is ex-boxer Terry Malloy, who is driven to confront union corruption after growing close to a woman (Eva Marie Saint) whose brother was murdered for cooperating with authorities. Rod Steiger, Lee J. Cobb, and Karl Malden co-star under Elia Kazan’s potent direction; scripted by Budd Schulberg. 108 min. BW/Rtg: NR
A Man For All Seasons (1966)
When Henry VIII (Robert Shaw) sought a divorce and remarriage, he thought he could count on the support of Sir Thomas More (Best Actor Oscar-winning Paul Scofield) in splitting the nation from the Catholic Church. The regent didn’t reckon with his Lord Chancellor’s refusal to compromise either piety or principle, no matter the cost. Adapted by Robert Bolt from his play, this winner of six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and director Fred Zinnemann, co-stars Wendy Hiller, Orson Welles. 120 min. C/Rtg: G
Tootsie (1982)
Dustin Hoffman is impatient, unemployed actor Michael Dorsey, who dons dresses and makeup in order to land a job as a woman in a TV soap opera. While posing as "Dorothy Michaels," Michael learns first-hand about the nature of women and men through the co-star (Jessica Lange) he falls in love with, her father (Charles Durning), his flaky girlfriend (Teri Garr), and some jerky co-workers (Dabney Coleman, George Gaynes). With Geena Davis, Bill Murray, and director Sydney Pollack. 116 min. C/Rtg: PG
The Age Of Innocence (1993)
Martin Scorsese directs this lavish filming of Edith Wharton’s classic novel set against the backdrop of New York society of the 1870s. Aristocratic lawyer Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) questions his wedding plans when he falls for fiancée May Welland’s (Winona Ryder) cousin--the beautiful Countess Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer)--an American fleeing her disastrous marriage to a European nobleman. With Miriam Margolyes, Geraldine Chaplin, Michael Gough, Richard E. Grant. 138 min. C/Rtg: PG
Little Women (2019)
Infusing the 1868 Louisa May Alcott classic with contemporary sensibilities and nonlinear narrative, director/screenwriter Greta Gerwig stylishly recounts the tribulations and triumphs of willful aspiring novelist Jo March (Saoirse Ronan) through her Civil War-era upbringing and enduring bonds with siblings Meg (Emma Watson), Amy (Florence Pugh), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen). Great ensemble includes Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet, Chris Cooper, Bob Odenkirk. 135 min. C/Rtg: PG
