A landmark in international cinema, Lionel Rogosin's "Come Back, Africa" (1959) mixed documentary-style footage (shot in secret without government permission) and scripted drama to offer an early look at black life in Apartheid-era South Africa. A young man leaves his impoverished village to find work in Johannesburg, but must deal with prejudice and degradation. Zacharia Mgabi, Miriam Makeba star. Next, "Black Roots" (1970) features a gathering of notable African-Americans─activist Flo Kennedy, Reverend Frederick Douglass Kirkpatrick, musicians Larry Johnson and Wende Smith, and others─talking candidly about music, politics, and race in 20th-century America. 149 min. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; bonus documentaries "Have You Seen Drum Recently?" (1989), "An American in Sophiatown" (2007); bonus short "Bitter Sweet Stories"; interview; theatrical trailer. Two-disc set.
