When she broke into motion pictures in the mid-'30s, actress Frances Farmer (co-director/co-scripter Sheila McLaughlin) was an immediate sensation. She chafed against the studio system, however, and her willfulness was met with blackballing, institutionalization, and the dubious care of her mother (Victoria Boothby).
