In 1910 Chicago, hearing-impaired teacher Malindy (Michelle A. Banks) and illiterate fisherman Arthur (John Earl Jelks) would spark a relationship, and in a parallel story set 80 years later, artist Malaika (Banks) and librarian Nico (Jelks) would follow a similar arc.
