Jacques Feyder's touching drama of a simple soul stands out both for it's realistic cinematic technique in the market scenes and the nightmarish fantasy scenes as the protagonist is overwhelmed by the legal system. An aging Parisian peddler, who is happiest pushing his humble vegetable cart through the market serving his friends and customers, has his simple life upended after a chance encounter and misunderstanding with a surly policeman.
