In this adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel set in 19th-century England, sisters Deborah and Matty Jenkyns (Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench) find the social strictures governing the town of Cranford ruptured by the arrival of a handsome London doctor. Many others soon figure in the dramatic local gossip, including an old flame of Matty's (Michael Gambon) who reappears unexpectedly.
