Jean Cocteau's imaginative, surrealistic adaptation of the classic Marie de Beaumont fairy tale is cinematic poetry at its finest. The young and beautiful Belle (Josette Day) is held prisoner by the grotesque Beast (Jean Marais) as punishment after her father steals a rose from the creature's castle grounds.
