Basil Dearden's London Underground (Criterion Collection - Eclipse Series 25)
This collection showcases the talent of groundbreaking and controversial British filmmaker Basil Dearden. "Sapphire" (1959) stars Nigel Patrick as a London detective investigating a murder of a pregnant woman that's believed to be racially motivated. Powerful look at bigotry and social class in '50s England co-stars Michael Craig and Yvonne Mitchell. "The League of Gentlemen" (1960) has a crew of disgruntled army men attempting to pull off a million-dollar bank heist using their military skills. Jack Hawkins, Richard Attenborough, and Roger Livesey star. "All Night Long" (1962) reworks Shakespeare's "Othello" into the '60s London jazz club scene, as jealous singer Patrick McGoohan tries to ruin the interracial relationship between Paul Harris and Marti Stevens. Four-disc set also includes "Victim" (1961). 6 2/3 hrs. total. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
