Aki Kaurismaki's Leningrad Cowboys (Criterion Collection - Criterion Collection - Eclipse Series 29)
Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki presents a trio of comical films concerning an untalented Finnish rock band. "Leningrad Cowboys Go America" (1989) follows the fictional, pompadoured rockers as they head to America to become famous since "they put up with anything there." While traversing the New World with a dead member and an idiot who wants to join the band in tow, the group enjoys the seamier side of the U.S. Matti Pellonpää stars. Then, "Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses" (1994) picks up five years later and finds that the boys have fallen on hard times in Mexico. The band rejoins their manager (Pellonpää), who has degenerated into a delusional, self-proclaimed prophet, with the hopes that he'll lead them on a triumphant trip through Europe, but not before he steals the Statue of Liberty's nose. Three-disc set also includes "Leningrad Cowboys Total Balalaika Show." 4 hrs. total. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English and Finnish Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English; music videos. In English and Finnish with English subtitles.
