When Horror Came to Shochiku (Criterion Collection - Eclipse Series 37)
First: Talk about excitement! An extraterrestrial creature grows from a single cell brought to Earth by an exploratory space capsule and threatens to exterminate Tokyo with the steel spears it expels from its mouth. "The X from Outer Space" (1967) is an excellent Japanese monster mash! Eiji Okada, Toshiya Wazaki star. Next, a plane downed by a strange force crashes in the desert, and the survivors fall under the spell of a vampire-like being. The weird, gory Japanese shocker "Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell" (1968) stars Hideo Ko, Teruo Yoshida. AKA: "Body Snatcher from Hell." In "The Living Skeleton" (1968), a massacre onboard a ship haunts a young woman in a coastal town. Along with visions of the bony dead, she is spooked by her spectral twin. Yasunori Irikawa, Nobuo Kaneko star in the eerie film. In the sci-fi thriller "Genocide" (1968), a plane carrying an atom bomb is attacked by a strain of deadly bees created by a scientist plotting to take over the world. Hiroshi Aoyama, Saburo Aunuma star. AKA: "War of the Insects." 5 2/3 hrs. total on four discs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: Japanese PCM mono; Subtitles: English. In Japanese with English subtitles.
