In Satyajit Ray's "The Home and the World" (1984), a wealthy progressive (Victor Banerjee) invites a radicalized boyhood friend (Soumitra Chatterjee) to live with him and his lovely, sheltered wife (Swatilekha Chatterjee). His spouse soon finds herself tested by the friend's ideals and her growing love for him. Ray's contemporary read on Ibsen's "An Enemy of the People" (1989) follows a doctor (Chatterjee) facing reprisals for his insistence that contaminated water at a holy shrine is responsible for the plague attacking his village. Ray's final effort, the warm comedy of manners "The Stranger" (1991), tells of a man (Utpal Dutt) who returns to his native Calcutta after 35 years of travel to visit his niece (Mamata Shankar) and her husband (Deepankar De). Is he really the long-lost relative, or an impostor looking for an inheritance? 6 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: Bengali Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English. In Bengali with English subtitles. Three-disc set.
