Late Ozu (Criterion Collection - Eclipse Series 3)
Five films from the latter part of director Yasujiro Ozu's career are featured in a five-disc set. First, a Tokyo salaryman's already fragile marriage is challenged by his affair with a co-worker, in "Early Spring" (1956). Chikage Awashima stars. Two sisters are shocked to discover that the mother they long thought was dead is very much alive, in "Tokyo Twilight" (1957). Ozu's first color film, "Equinox Flower" (1958), is a beautifully designed domestic comedy-drama about the problems faced by a Tokyo businessman's daughter who decides to marry without her father's consent. Shin Saburi stars. Next, "Late Autumn" (1960) focuses on the bond that develops between a mother and daughter in the wake of the family patriarch's death. Setsuko Hara stars. And, an elderly man's adulterous affair threatens his relationship with his three daughters, even as his youngest prepares for her wedding, in "The End of Summer" (1961). 10 1/2 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: Japanese Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English. In Japanese with English subtitles.
