After a monk recognizes a newly-arrived brother to his cloister, and then viciously assaults him, the truth about the friars' shared past plays out in Juan Bustillo Oro's early Mexican sound effort Dos Monjes (1934). Indonesian director Usmar Ismail's After the Curfew (1954) follows a discharged freedom fighter whose return to civilian life in the wake of securing independence from the Dutch proves laden with betrayal and misery. A century's changing political tides in Cuba are chronicled by filmmaker Humberto Solás through the eyes of three women--an 1890s noble, a '30s heiress, and a '60s farm girl--each named Lucía (1968). A West African intellectual's optimistic journey to Paris in search of dignified work, fellowship and acceptance runs aground upon harsh reality in Mauritanian helmer Med Hondo's Soleil Ô (1970). Iranian director Bahram Bayzai's Downpour (1972) takes a bemused look at a young schoolteacher whose coveted appointment in a new village sours over the kids' and locals' prying into his personal life. Brazilian filmmaker Hector Babenco offered a harrowing look into the lives of Sao Paolo's street children through the eyes of Pixote (1981), a 10-year old boy steeped in poverty, drugs and prostitution. 11 1/2 hrs. total on nine discs.
