Oshima's Outlaw Sixties (Criterion Collection - Eclipse Series 21)
Sample the provocative works of Japanese filmmaker Nagisa Oshima with this collection of bold films from the "Godard of the East." In "Japanese Summer: Double Suicide" (1965), a sex-crazed woman finds herself trapped underground with a suicidal man and a gangster. Keiko Sakurai, Kei Satô star. A killer is blackmailed into safeguarding a corrupt businessman's ill-gotten cash, but decides instead to spend it on "The Pleasures of the Flesh" (1965). Katsuo Nakamura, Mariko Kaga star. Innovative narrative techniques mark "Violence at Noon" (1966), as two women unexpectedly protect a violent sex criminal. Hideo Kanze, Hideko Kawaguchi star. Four high school students "Sing a Song of Sex" (1967) before meeting up with a drunken teacher. Ichirô Araki, Juzo Itami star. "Three Resurrected Drunkards" (1968) go on the run after being mistaken for illegal aliens in this barbed satire aimed at Japan's attitudes towards Korean immigrants. Kazuhiko Kato, Osamu Kitayama star. 7 3/4 hrs. total on five discs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: Japanese Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English. In Japanese with English subtitles.
