The Passionate Friends (1949)
Trapped in a stagnant marriage, Britisher Mary Justin (Ann Todd) was on holiday in Switzerland when she encountered former paramour Steven Stratton (Trevor Howard). She finds herself forced to weigh the temptation from the rekindling of old romantic feelings against the potential betrayal of their respective spouses (Claude Rains, Isabel Dean). David Lean's moving read on the H.G. Wells novel also stars Betty Ann Davies, Arthur Howard. 89 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Madeleine (1950)
Based on a true story that shocked Victorian Britain, this crime drama from director David Lean stars Ann Todd as Madeleine Smith, a young woman from an upper-class Glasgow family who has a secret affair with handsome social climber Emile L'Angelier (Ivan Desny), then spurns him to accept the proposal of well-to-do William Minnoch (Norman Wooland). When L'Angelier threatens to reveal their romance and is later found dead of arsenic poisoning, Madeleine becomes the center of a sensational murder trial. With Leslie Banks, Barbara Everest. 115 min. BW/Rtg: NR
The Sound Barrier (1952)
With the war's end, aviation magnate John Ridgefield (Ralph Richardson) single-mindedly focused his corporate resources into the achievement of supersonic flight. His efforts may instead create a barrier between himself and his daughter (Ann Todd) after her test pilot husband (Nigel Patrick) becomes a sacrifice to the pursuit. David Lean's stirring sky saga co-stars Denholm Elliott, Dinah Sheridan, John Justin, Joseph Tomelty; screenplay by Terence Rattigan. 109 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Hobson's Choice (1954)
Tyrannical boot-maker H.H. Hobson (Charles Laughton) shrugged at the intent of his youngest daughters to marry and leave his shop, but put his foot down at losing Maggie (Brenda de Banzie), his eldest and most competent. She'd turn the tables by going into competition--starting by hiring away (and marrying) her father's meek apprentice (John Mills). Director/co-scripter David Lean's classic comedy take on the Harold Brighouse play co-stars Prunella Scales, Daphne Anderson. 108 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Summertime (1955)
Director David Lean’s adaptation of Arthur Laurents’ play "The Time of the Cuckoo" stars Katharine Hepburn as Jane Hudson, a never-married, middle-aged American woman on vacation in Venice, Italy. Jane becomes unexpectedly drawn to handsome and charming local man Renato (Rossano Brazzi), but their love affair may be over before it even starts as she learns that her recent Romeo is married. Classic romantic drama also stars Darren McGavin, Isa Miranda. 98 min. C/Rtg: NR
