In this moving, early effort from director/co-writer Akira Kurosawa, Toshiro Mifune stars as a sickly criminal who is treated by dedicated doctor Takashi Shimura. Struggling to improve the lives of those around him in the lower-class section of a post-World War II Japanese city, the alcoholic Shimura forges an unlikely bond with the tubercular gangster.
