Father Of The Bride (1950)
Light-hearted comedy stars Spencer Tracy as the titular papa, Stanley Banks, who’s coping with one emergency after another as daughter Kay (Elizabeth Taylor) prepares to walk down the aisle. In addition to the logistical and financial tribulations of the day, Stanley must also wrestle with the emotional turmoil he’s feeling as he comes to terms with his daughter’s imminent nuptials. Sentimental gem, directed by Vincente Minnelli, also stars Joan Bennett, Don Taylor, Russ Tamblyn, and Billie Burke. 94 min. BW/Rtg: NR
The Last Time I Saw Paris (1954)
Loosely based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story "Babylon Revisited," Richard Brooks’ classic romantic drama set in post-WWII Europe follows journalist Charles Wills (Van Johnson) as he is kissed by a beautiful stranger (Elizabeth Taylor) while covering the end-of-war celebrations. A whirlwind romance ensues, and after the pair wed they find their lives growing apart--resulting in tragedy. With Walter Pidgeon, Donna Reed, Eva Gabor. 116 min. C/Rtg: NR
Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? (1966)
An evening with George and Martha (Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton) becomes a searing event of vicious verbal backbiting, disclosed secrets, alcoholic indulgence and bizarre fantasies in this faithful adaptation of Edward Albee’s Broadway play. Winner of five Oscars, including Best Actress and Supporting Actress, this was Mike Nichols’ directorial debut. Co-stars George Segal, Sandy Dennis. 131 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Reflections In A Golden Eye (1939)
Controversial, emotionally charged drama stars Marlon Brando as Weldon Penderton, a latently gay army major stationed in 1948 Georgia and unhappily married to the shrewish Leonora (Elizabeth Taylor). While Leonora has an affair with one of Weldon’s fellow officers (Brian Keith), he finds himself drawn to a young non-com (Robert Forster). Julie Harris also stars in director John Huston’s powerful adaptation of the Carson McCullers novel. 109 min. C/Rtg: NR
