Tommy Lee Jones won an Emmy for his portrayal of condemned killer Gary Gilmore, who became the first person executed in the U.S. in 10 years when he was shot by a Utah firing squad in 1977, in this acclaimed made-for-TV biodrama. Based on Norman Mailer's book on Gilmore's trial and fight for his death sentence to be carried out, the film also stars Eli Wallach, Christine Lahti, and Rosanna Arquette as Gilmore's teenage lover.
