Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema XXVI (Dr. Broadway / Smooth As Silk / The Great Gatsby)
Dr. Broadway (1942)
Theater District GP Timothy Kane (Macdonald Carey) received an odd request from dying ex-con Vic Telli (Eduardo Ciannelli)...make sure that his $100,000 nest egg got in the hands of his estranged daughter. Unfortunately, some creeps with designs on the loot hastened Telli to his reward, pinned it on Kane--and now, the doctor's own prognosis is grim if he can't prove the frame. Snappy thriller and early career effort for Anthony Mann co-stars Jean Phillips, J. Carrol Naish, Richard Lane, Joan Woodbury. 66 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Smooth As Silk (1946)
Criminal defense attorney Mark Fenton (Kent Taylor) was angry that his ambitious actress girlfriend Paula Marlowe (Virginia Grey) used his connections to finagle a part in the latest production from impresario Stephen Elliott (John Litel). That was nothing, though, compared to his response when she announced her engagement to Elliott. The miffed mouthpiece decided to kill the producer...and use his practical know-how for an ironclad frame-up on his ex! Snappy little thriller co-stars Milburn Stone, Jane Adams, Danny Morton. 66 min. BW/Rtg: NR
