Shell-shocked from his service in the World War, czarist soldier Ivan Filimonov (Fyodor Nikitin) wandered Russia for a decade before recovering glimmers of his former life. Setting out for his hometown of St. Petersburg, he found little recognizable in the socialist hubbub of the renamed Leningrad...and discovered that his wife (Lyudmila Semyonova) was remarried to a callous party apparatchik (Valeri Solovtsov).
