For Me And My Gal (1942)
Delightful romp set in pre-WWI vaudeville, with naive young singer Jo Hayden (Judy Garland) being wooed away from her stage partners by debonair hoofer Harry Palmer (Gene Kelly, in his film debut). The pair struggles to make it big, and find their romance interrupted by Harry’s enlistment in an entertainment troupe overseas. George Murphy, Ben Blue, and Keenan Wynn co-star under Busby Berkeley’s direction. Songs include "Oh, You Beautiful Doll," "After You’ve Gone," and the title song. 104 min. BW/Rtg: NR
The Pirate (1948)
One of M-G-M’s most glorious musicals is set on a 19th-century Caribbean island and stars Gene Kelly as the wandering troubadour Serafin, who tries to win the heart of affianced local beauty Manuela Alva (Judy Garland) by impersonating Macoco, the notorious buccaneer she secretly pines for. Walter Slezak, Gladys Cooper, Reginald Owen, and the Nicholas Brothers co-star under director Vincent Minnelli; Cole Porter’s score includes "Nina," "Mack the Black," and "Be a Clown." 101 min. C/Rtg: NR
An American In Paris (1951)
The dancing of Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, a thrilling score by George Gershwin, and the romantic settings of Paris make for a timeless musical delight that garnered six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Inspired by Gershwin’s 1928 symphonic tone poem, the M-G-M classic tells the story of an American expatriate artist who falls in love with a beautiful French girl. Co-stars Oscar Levant; directed by Vincente Minnelli. Songs include "Embraceable You," "Nice Work If You Can Get It." 114 min. C/Rtg: NR
Singin' In The Rain (1952)
Stars Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O’Connor, M-G-M’s song catalog, and a script by Betty Comden and Adolph Green combine to make what is regarded as the best musical of all time. Set in Hollywood at the end of the silent era, a dashing film star puts up with a vapid starlet, while falling in love with a humble chorus girl. Songs include "Make ’Em Laugh," "Good Morning," "You Were Meant for Me," and the title tune. Co-stars Jean Hagen; co-directed by Kelly and Stanley Donen. 103 min. C/Rtg: G
Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English (SDH).
