George Sanders stars as suave gentleman thief-turned-detective Simon Templar (aka the Saint) in five mysteries based on the stories by Leslie Charteris. First, Templar travels to San Francisco where he gets mixed up in a female gang leader's (Wendy Barrie) crusade against a mysterious crime boss, in "The Saint Strikes Back" (1939). Jonathan Hale co-stars. Next, a multi-million-dollar counterfeiting scheme draws Templar to England where he reluctantly works with old nemesis Inspector Teal (Gordon McLeod), in "The Saint in London" (1939). With Sally Gray. "The Saint's Double Trouble" (1940) features Sanders in a dual role, as both Templar and the jewel-smuggler he's after, in a tale of stolen diamonds, Egyptian mummies, and mistaken identities. Bela Lugosi also stars. When his friend Inspector Fernack (Hale) is framed by race-fixing mobsters, Templar takes it upon himself to clear his name, in "The Saint Takes Over" (1940). And, Templar investigates a case where some smuggled stamps lead to murder, in "The Saint in Palm Springs" (1941), Sanders' final series appearance. Barrie co-stars. 5 2/3 hrs. total on two discs. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
