In a tough Philadelphia neighborhood of the 1970s, small-time hoodlum Mickey (Philip Seymour Hoffman) recruits fellow thug Arthur (John Turturro) to help him look into the suspicious death of his stepson (Caleb Landry Jones). As a newspaperman (Richard Jenkins) investigates the story, he is drawn to Mickey's wife (Christina Hendricks), while Mickey's problems with drugs and debt threaten to spin out of control.
