One of the most unusual TV western heroes was Richard Boone's black-clad, erudite gunslinger-for-hire known only as "Paladin." After fighting in the Civil War, Paladin hung out his shingle outside San Francisco's Hotel Carlton and rode out whenever the call came in from someone in need, and, though he preferred to settle scores peacefully, it was never a prerequisite.
