Produced outside of Japan’s studio system by the nation’s teachers’ union, employing thousands of survivors as extras, and long out of mass circulation, this matter-of-fact and politically charged drama offers a harrowing look through schoolchildren’s eyes at the first city destroyed by the A-bomb’s deployment, both the immediate aftermath in August 1945 and the lingering societal impacts felt eight years later. Yumeji Tsukioka, Isuzu Yamada, Eiji Okada star. 104 min. Standard; Soundtrack: Japanese; Subtitles: English; bonus documentary "Hiroshima Nagasaki Download" (2011); featurettes. In Japanese with English subtitles.
