In 1933 Berlin, American Colony School headmaster Prof. Nichols (Kent Smith) kept a wary eye on the budding relationship between student Anna Miller (Bonita Granville) and Karl Bruner (Tim Holt), who attended the neighboring school. Six years later, Anna--now a teacher--gets hauled off by the Gestapo, and SS Lieutenant Karl faces a crisis of conscience over leaving her to their mercies.
