The Wizard Of Oz (1939)
Follow Dorothy over the rainbow and down the Yellow Brick Road in one of the most beloved films in cinematic history. Not in Kansas anymore after a tornado whisks her away to the Land of Oz, Dorothy is off for adventure in the Emerald City with the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, the Cowardly Lion, and Toto, too, all the while being chased by the Wicked Witch of the West and looking for a way home. Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Margaret Hamilton, and Frank Morgan star. 102 min. BW&C/Rtg: G
Oklahoma! (1955)
In 1943, the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II broke Broadway ground with this award-winning musical, which received a grand screen adaptation by director Fred Zinnemann. Cowhand Curly (Gordon MacRae) and the beautiful Laurey (Shirley Jones, in her film debut) discover love together in the Oklahoma Territory of 1906. The memorable score includes "Oh What a Beautiful Morning," "I Cain’t Say No," "People Will Say We’re in Love," and the title tune. With Rod Steiger, Gloria Grahame, and Eddie Albert. 145 min. C/Rtg: G
Yellow Submarine (1968)
Remember: "It’s all in the mind." When the happiness-hating Blue Meanie and his monstrous allies overrun Pepperland, it’s The Beatles (actors supplied their voices) to the rescue in this psychedelic animated odyssey. Along with five new songs recorded for the film (including "Baby, You’re a Rich Man," "Hey, Bulldog," and "It’s All Too Much"), the Fab Four score includes "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "When I’m 64," and more; with a cameo live-action appearance by John, Paul, George, and Ringo. 90 min. C/Rtg: G
Cabaret (1972)
In Weimar Republic Berlin, with the rise of Nazi power looming, free-spirited American chanteuse Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) juggles affairs with an expatriate writer (Michael York) and a nobleman (Helmut Griem) against the decadent backdrop of a seamy nightspot. Bob Fosse’s multi-Oscar-winning musical, inspired by Christopher Isherwood’s "Berlin Stories," co-stars Joel Grey, Marisa Berenson, Fritz Wepper. 124 min. C/Rtg: PG
Victor/Victoria (1982)
From director/scripter Blake Edwards comes this sparkling musical comedy remake of the 1933 German film "Viktor und Viktoria." Julie Andrews stars as Victoria Grant, a would-be chanteuse in 1930s France who will do anything to get her big break...including posing as a female impersonator. Her ruse is complicated by a suspicious mobster (James Garner) and a short-tempered floozy (Lesley Ann Warren). With Robert Preston, Alex Karras, John Rhys-Davies. 133 min. C/Rtg: PG
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Sexy dance moves and a soundtrack packed with pop hits drive this sensual drama set at a Catskills resort in 1963. While vacationing with her wealthy family, sheltered teen Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) learns about life and love when she embarks on an unlikely romance with handsome dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), much to the consternation of her disapproving father (Jerry Orbach). With Cynthia Rhodes, Kelly Bishop, Jane Brucker. 105 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
