On a Neapolitan isle in 1950, reticent letter carrier Mario Ruoppolo (Massimo Troisi, who co-wrote) made a friend of his sole client, the exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret). Having developed a love of poetry, Mario finds himself leaning on the man of letters for the words to win the beautiful villager (Maria Grazia Cucinotta) who'd captured his heart.
