Featuring the same cast and director as the Royal Court Theatre production of David Storey's play, Lindsay Anderson's screen version stars Alan Bates as Andrew Shaw, the eldest son of a working-class English family who returns home for his parents' 40th wedding anniversary. But with middle child Colin (James Bolam) about to enter into a loveless marriage and youngest brother Steven (Brian Cox) on the brink of a nervous breakdown, Andrew begins to realize that the ties that hold his family together are about to unravel.
