Of all the places we've ever been, and of all the programs we've produced over the years, without question, this is one of the all time classics. Having been invited by a group of locals to fish threshers off the beach in Malibu, from their kayaks, I had no idea what to expect. What happened out there on the water was incomprehensible, as these guys went head to head with fish topping the 200 pound mark. Working from platforms that put them only a few inches off the water, this glimpse into their world is going to leave you shaking your head in disbelief. It takes a tough, unique individual to even think about fishing threshers from a yak. It isn't for everyone, but for the few, it's an experience that will last a lifetime. But as hard core as these guys are, what impressed me the most was the camaraderie, and the way they worked together, helping one another whenever someone got bit. Their energy reminded me of what it was like surfing in the early 60's, when just being out there was enough. This was as close to a oneness with the sport that I've ever experienced.
