In the 19th century, Jacob Wheeler (Matthew Settle) travels west to seek the "American dream." After rescuing and later marrying Thunder Heart Woman (Tonantzin Carmelo), a young Lakota, Jacob’s new and growing family experiences triumphs and hardships along the path to a better life.
