In response to critics of "The Birth of a Nation," D.W. Griffith created this lavish time-jumping melodrama that chronicles man’s greed and prejudices. The four parallel storylines depict the conflict between Prince Belshazzar of Babylon and Cyrus the Great of Persia; the wedding at Cana and the Crucifixion of Jesus; the religious intolerance that led to the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre; and, finally, a contemporary story about evil capitalists and striking mill workers.
