The Shop Around The Corner (1940)
The oft-filmed Hungarian play "Parfumerie"--which also formed 1949’s "In the Good Old Summertime" and 1998’s "You’ve Got Mail"--was the basis for this classic Ernst Lubitsch charmer. James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan star as bickering co-workers in a Budapest leathergoods shop...who don’t realize that they’re each other’s anonymous lonelyhearts pen-pal. Frank Morgan, Joseph Schildkraut co-star in this beloved comedy. 99 min. BW/Rtg: NR
The Mortal Storm (1940)
Martin Breitner (James Stewart) is a farmer in mid-’30s Austria who undertakes a dangerous mission to rescue former girlfriend Freya (Margaret Sullavan), whose stepbrothers and fiancé have joined the Nazi party even though her father was sent to a concentration camp. Powerful anti-Nazi drama, which led Hitler to ban all M-G-M films from Germany, co-stars Robert Young, Frank Morgan, and Robert Stack. 100 min. BW/Rtg: NR
The Naked Spur (1953)
Magnificently atmospheric western stars James Stewart as an embittered frontiersman-turned-bounty hunter who recruits a prospector (Millard Mitchell) and a former Union Army officer (Ralph Meeker) to help him track down a fugitive killer (Robert Ryan). But the trio finds the job marred by the presence of their quarry's girlfriend (Janet Leigh) and his nefarious attempts to turn the partners against each other. Anthony Mann directs. 91 min. C/Rtg: NR
How The West Was Won (1962)
The sprawling story of three generations of 19th-century pioneers, and their odyssey from New England to the frontier, is a true western classic with an all-star cast. The saga begins as families are joined together when fur trapper Linus Rawlings (James Stewart) marries Eve Prescott (Carroll Baker) after saving her family from river pirates. John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Debbie Reynolds, and Gregory Peck co-star; Spencer Tracy narrates. Co-directed by John Ford, Henry Hathaway, and George Marshall. 164 min. C/Rtg: G
Standard and Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English (SDH).
