Joan the Maid

Director Jacques Rivette's two-part chronicle of the life of the 15th-century French heroine opens with "Joan the Maid: The Battles," in which a teenage Joan attempts to convince the French Dauphin that she has been called by God to lead them in combat against the English, culminating in victory at the Battle of Orleans. Then, "Joan the Maid: The Prisons" tells of how Joan was left by her men to be captured by the British, bound in chains and charged with witchcraft, leading to a fiery death at the stake.
