Boyz N The Hood (1991)
Writer/director John Singleton’s acclaimed debut is a graphic and powerful look at African-American life in South-Central Los Angeles. The film chronicles the efforts of three young black men (Cuba Gooding, Jr., Morris Chestnut, and Ice Cube) as they attempt through different means to cope with the violence that plagues the gang-ridden streets they grew up on. With Larry Fishburne, Angela Bassett, Nia Long. 112 min. C/Rtg: R
Poetic Justice (1993)
Writer/director John Singleton follows "Boyz N the Hood" with this perceptive drama starring Janet Jackson as Justice, a hairdresser and aspiring poetess from South Central L.A., who rejects the advances of postal worker Lucky (Tupac Shakur). But the two start to form an unexpected bond as they share a car trip to Oakland. Maya Angelou wrote the poetry and makes a cameo appearance. Regina King, Joe Torry, Roger Guenveur Smith also star. 109 min. C/Rtg: R
Baby Boy (2001)

Johnson). When her new ex-con boyfriend (Ving Rhames) moves in, Jody must make some major decisions about his life. With Tamara Bass, Snoop Dogg, and Omar Gooding. 130 min. C/Rtg: R
