When brutal convict Boris Karloff whacks a jailhouse snitch, will trustee cellmate Phillips Holmes observe "The Criminal Code" (1931) and keep his mouth shut, or will he spill to sympathetic warden Walter Huston? Constance Cummings, Mary Doran co-star under Howard Hawks' direction. It was bad for bootlegger Karloff when son Robert Young renounced his heritage and the family business. It got worse when the kid started courting the daughter (Cummings) of his bitterest turf rival (Leo Carrillo). The mob war-"Romeo and Juliet" pastiche "The Guilty Generation" (1931) co-stars Leslie Fenton. In "Behind the Mask" (1932), undercover fed Jack Holt gets in good with mobster Karloff to order to break the drug syndicate masterminded by demented doctor Edward Van Sloan. Cummings, Claude King co-star. 4 hrs. total on three discs. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; photo gallery.
