Ang Lee's sensual espionage drama, set in Japanese-occupied China in the late 1930s, concerns the transgressive affair between collaborating businessman Mr. Yee (Tony Leung) and Wong Chia Chi (Wei Tang), a young member of the Chinese resistance recruited to kill him. Becoming the sadomasochistic Yee's mistress, the would-be Mata Hari finds her patriotism placing both her body and soul in equal jeopardy.
