While Hollywood may have drifted far asea from the source material with this first talkie adaptation of the Melville classic, John Barrymore offers a striking effort as Captain Ahab, who’d been edging out his jealous brother (Lloyd Hughes) in their rivalry over a minister’s daughter (Joan Bennett)...until his ship’s fateful encounter with the Great White Whale. Returning to sea after the loss of his leg, his mania for vengeance may cost his new crew dearly.
