Amongst a nomadic tribe in Iran, "Gabbeh" (1996), a young woman named after the traditional hand-woven carpet, weaves a tale as colorful and intricate as her namesake, recounting the story of a man who loves her, but is forbidden by Gabbeh's father to marry her. Mohsen Makhmalbaf's radiant fable stars Shaghayeh Djodat in the title role. Khorshid (Tahmineh Normatova) is a 10-year-old blind boy who works at a musical instrument shop in Tajikistan to help support his poor mother. However, he often gets distracted by the sounds of the world around him, and the threat of losing his job poses a huge problem to Khorshid's family in Makhmalbaf's compelling effort "The Silence" (1998). Lastly, in the documentary "The Garden" (2012), the filmmaker and his son Maysam sojourn to Israel in order to interview adherents of the Baha’i Faith, the religious order birthed a century and a half ago in Persia, and subject to ongoing persecution within Iran's borders today. 4 hrs. total on two discs. Widescreen; Soundtrack: Farsi; Subtitles: English; audio commentary on "Gabbeh"; featurettes; image gallery; theatrical trailers. In Farsi with English subtitles.
