Thomas (Garrett Hedlund), a filmmaker with creative block, ventures into the desert with hopes of either finding or killing himself. Instead he meets Jack (Oscar Isaac), an intellectual and ingratiating drifter whose psychotic side slowly surfaces. The cat-and-mouse game between the two escalates when Thomas returns to L.A. after committing a violent act and Jack, who witnessed the crime, follows.
