Shot on location in Egypt and Italy, this striking cinema rendition of Arnold Schoenberg’s unfinished opera from filmmakers Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub offers a remarkable depiction of the Exodus story, as the overwhelmed Moses (Günter Reich)--newly tasked by God with delivering his people--turns to his glib brother (Louis Devos) to be his interlocutor, but finds himself at odds with his sibling over the Lord’s true message.
