Nanook of the North: The Wedding of Palo and other Films of Artic Life
(1934)
The groundbreaking silent film "Nanook of the North," detailing an Eskimo family's harsh existence on the frigid shores of Canada's Hudson Bay, wasn't the first documentary, but director Robert Flaherty's breathtaking location photography did help to set the genre's tone for decades to come. Next, the Danish-made sound film "The Wedding of Palo" chronicles life in an Inuit community in eastern Greenland and follows a native woman who must choose between two rival suitors. Standard; Soundtrack: music score; bonus documentary "Nanook Revisited" (1988); bonus shorts "Arctic Hunt" (1913), "Dwellings of the Far North" (1928), "Eskimo Hunters of Northwest Alaska" (1949), "The Face of the High Arctic" (1958). Silent with music score.
