During World War II, hard-partying Oklahoma college boy Alvin Woods (Andy Griffith) deals with his endangered deferment by enlisting in the Coast Guard, where he’s soon preparing chow under the watch of wise-cracking master chef Red Wildoe (Walter Matthau).
