After doing a stint in prison, talented songwriter Bobby Ogden (Peter Fonda) heads to Texas to track down country star Garland Dupree (James Callahan), who became successful after hoodwinking several of Bobby's tunes. Bobby eventually hooks up with Dupree's backup singer (Susan Saint James), who helps him become a sensation.
