In 2016, with his Damascus factory destroyed and his family in a Lebanese refugee camp, Syrian chocolatier Issam Hadhad (Hatem Ali) opted for a Canadian government initiative and relocated to small-town Nova Scotia. With English-fluent son Tareq (Ayham Abou Ammar) having to table his medical ambitions to set up their new lives, Issam turned to small-scale candymaking--and found assimilation growing all the sweeter.
