Pelle the Conqueror

Max Von Sydow gives a mesmerizing performance as Swedish widower Lasse Karlsson, who sets out for a new life with his young son Pelle (Pelle Hvenegaard) in rural Denmark in the mid-19th-century, in this winner of the Best Foreign Film Academy Award. As Lasse exhausts himself as a stablekeeper to provide the pair's necessities, Pelle dreams of exploring the world beyond their harsh village.
